Located in the beautiful resort community of Charlevoix is one of Michigan’s premier historical attractions, Castle Farms. Once a dairy farm and considered “Rock n’Roll Central” playing host to major bands like Def Leppard and Aerosmith, it’s now a hot spot for premier weddings and events.
We recently visited on our way back home from Petoskey and opted to take a self-guided tour of the castle. With the self-guided tour you can explore the castle and all its history at your own pace.
The tour starts off with a brief introductory video on the history of the castle. The kids were a little bored with the video but it really helps you to understand the background.
The tour itself was pretty self-explanatory. We were given a guide book and map. The kids were handed a special numbered map with questions along the way they could choose to answer to help them learn more. The map is numbered and easy to follow. We might have got lost once or twice but there was very friendly and knowledgeable staff around to guide us back on track.
It’s a wonderful educational experience. You can see pictures of the farm and the restoration and all kinds of concert memorabilia during your tour. It’s a cross between a historic site and a museum. There’s even a room with a museum within on the tour. The kids learned so much from the experience and I would definitely recommend visiting if you’ll be driving through Northern Michigan.
The grounds are absolutely beautiful. I could sit there for hours soaking it all in. Make sure you pay a visit to the dragon before you leave. He’s quite the site to see.
We spent about 2 hours at the castle so allow yourself plenty of time for exploration.
