Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo and there’s plenty of fun things to do! Here’s a list of my favorite things to do in Kalamazoo.
Air Zoo— It features amusement park-style rides, 3D/4D Missions Theater, historical exhibits, educational activities, flight simulators, and more than 50 rare and historic aircrafts. For three years in a row the Air Zoo was voted the “Best Place to Take Out-of-Towners” and “Best Place to Spend a Day with Your Family”.
Kalamazoo Nature Center— There’s so much to do at the nature center. If you love to hike they have several trails to challenge you. If you prefer the indoors the interpretive center has many different things to explore including educational exhibits, hands-on activities and a beautiful tropical rain forest room.
Kalamazoo Valley Museum— Free general admission. Located in downtown. All ages can spend a day exploring the many exhibits including an Egyptian mummy.
Arcadia Creek Park & Festival Place– Located in downtown Kalamazoo you can eat lunch, play in the park, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. During the summer you will find lots of festivals here including the Greek Fest, Island Fest, Rib Fest, and much more. These festivals feature live music, entertainment, good eating and shopping.
Bronson Park– History buffs will love this little park where Abraham Lincoln once gave a speech. The park holds an annual lighting of the trees once a year in November and Candy Cane Lane –walkway with several huge strung-up candy canes– is very popular during the Christmas season.
Kalamazoo Institute of Arts— Nonprofit art museum and school offering classes, exhibitions, lectures, events, activities and a permanent collection of art pieces including American painting, European and American prints and photographs, and pre-Columbian gold.
Kal-Haven Trail– Bike, hike, skateboard, roller skate, snowmobile, and cross country sky on this 34-mile crushed limestone path connecting South Haven and Kalamazoo. The trail has a really cool camelback bridge and covered bridge.
Walk The Skywalk– The Kalamazoo “Skywalk” is the bridge that crosses over Rose St. in downtown Kalamazoo. It connects the parking garage to the Radisson Hotel. My kids have always enjoyed watching the traffic below through the see-through glass.
Enjoy Downtown– Kalamazoo has an extraordinary downtown. If it’s a nice day out take a stroll and enjoy the exquisite architecture and scenery. Shop the outdoor Kalamazoo Mall. Great eats downtown include The Union Cabaret and Grille, Zazios and Webster’s Prime. If you’re looking to take home some Kalamazoo memorabilia The Spirit of Kalamazoo has some really cute things.
