If you’re looking for something fun and educational to do in Northern Ohio the Toledo Museum of Art is a great place to check out. It’s easy to get to as it’s right off Interstate 75, west of Toledo’s downtown business district.
We planned on doing a day trip to Toledo last Saturday visiting the Toledo Museum of Art and the Toledo Zoo but ended up wandering the halls of the Art Museum for nearly 3 hours not even making it to the zoo in the end. That’s ok though. It was totally worth it. My girls (16) and (18) thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was amazed at how much there is to see and do here. From Modern and Contemporary to Ancient Art there’s something to spark everyone’s interest. I personally enjoyed the Middle Ages and Ancient European works of art the most but it was all interesting!
While you’re there make sure you check out the Peristyle Theater designed by Edward B. Green as part of the Museum building’s 1933 expansion. It’s most distinguishing architectural feature is a curving row of 28 columns which surrounds the main seating area, arranged in tiers reminiscent of an Ancient Greek amphitheater. I felt like we time traveled back into ancient Greek times. It was really neat to see!
If you’re hungry the Museum Café is a really nice place to eat. It’s located right inside the Grove Place entrance of the main Museum building and offers gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts, beverages and more. While it was a bit pricey the food was excellent and offered a great place to relax and rest our feet after walking the halls for over an hour.
The Museum also has a store which features a selection of merchandise and gifts inspired by TMA’s world-famous collection. Although I didn’t get a chance to check the store out for myself I did peak my head in there and it looked like it had a good selection of merchandise available.
Admission to the Art Museum is free but you will need to pay a parking fee which is $7 per vehicle. Museum members do not need to pay the parking fee.
The Museum is closed every Monday and on Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. For hours and additional information you can visit their website here.
