Since we were going to be passing through Nashville on our most recent road trip I thought we’d pay our respects to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and one of the best-selling music artists of all time– Johnny Cash.
Even though he’s primarily known for his country music his genre expanded way beyond that into rock and roll, blues, folk and even gospel music. This crossover appeal won him multiple inductions into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.
This legend’s final resting place is Hendersonville Memory Gardens in Hendersonville, Tennessee just a few miles northeast of Nashville. He was laid to rest here with his beloved wife, June Carter. Several members of the Carter Family and other country music stars are buried here as well.
Finding the Gardens itself is easy but finding the gravesite is another story. When we pulled into Hendersonville Memory Gardens we had no clue where we were going. It wasn’t busy. There was nobody there to ask for directions and there were no signs pointing us in the right direction. It was anything but obvious that a legend was buried on these grounds.
We drove around the cemetery at least twice, parking and walking up to all the huge stones that we thought might have been his gravesite with no luck. So, I decided to do what I do best….Google it. Unfortunately that wasn’t much of a help either. The best information I got came from someone who suggested we walk into the funeral parlor and ask for directions.
It wasn’t busy and there was no funeral services going on so I took their suggestion and walked in. I was greeted by a friendly face and I proceeded to ask, “Hi there. Do you know where I can find….” He finished my sentence with, “Johnny Cash?” I smiled and laughed and said, “Yes sir.” He handed me a map and told me they got asked that so frequently that that had this.
His grave is located in the middle of the cemetery towards the front in the “Matthew” section lot 3 section C space 3. Matthew 3C-3. You will find June right next to him at 3C-4. There will be a sidewalk that leads right up to the gravesites and a bench that sits right next to them.
Hope this helps someone who has to Google “where is Johnny Cash’s gravesite located in Hendersonville Memory Gardens” like I did. You might even witness some kiss marks if it hasn’t rained lately. Someone even left some Whisky and some guitar picks on his grave. RIP Johnny.
